[Also in Group VIII] A means for feeding thin material, for example, paper or metal foil, comprises the combination of means for supporting a coil of foil, releasable controlling means for holding the coil against rotation, intermittently operable feed rollers adapted to advance the foil to a wrapping or other machine, a gravity roller adapted to act on the portion of the foil between the coil and the feed rollers, and means responsive to movement of the gravity roller for releasing the coil controlling means and enabling the said roller during its descent to draw off a length of foil from the coil. Foil c is supplied from a roll n mounted on a supporting spindle s braked by a friction brake interposed between it and a ratchet wheel t prevented from rotating by a pawl u. A feed roller d is driven through a sprocket i and a unidirectional clutch by a chain h connected to a link j oscillated by a rotating crank k. The foil passes around a gravity roller o supported in vertical guides r such that during the actuation of the feed roller d the loop formed around the roller o shortens, thus causing the roller o to rise and consequently actuate a spring-urged ramp w pivoted at x, thus through parts y, z, causing the pawl u to release the ratchet wheel t. During the following stationary interval of the roller d, the roller o drops, thus drawing off a length of foil c from the coil n which is then arrested on re-engagement of the pawl u. Foil is fed by the roller d between spring-pressed plates 2 and 4, the latter plate being pivotally mounted on the former, and then along guides b. A transverse severing means for the foil comprises a reciprocating cutter blade 8 guided by one edge of the plate 2 and a groove 9 in the plate 4. The blade 8 is mounted on a sleeve 7 reciprocated along a guide spindle 6 by a lever 10 oscillated by a rotary cam 11 driven in synchronism with the crank k. The sleeve also carries a projection 19 which can engage a projection 20 on the plate 4 so as to raise the plate 4 and release the foil during the feeding operation.
