Abstract

323,383. Williams, W. P., (Wach, H.). Jan. 14, 1929. Force-feed lubricating. - In a steam power plant consisting of a reversing reciprocating engine and an exhaust steam turbine coupled to the same working shaft through gearing and a hydraulic coupling which is filled for forward running only, control of the lubrication and the supply of liquid to the coupling and steam to the turbine are effected by a fluid pressure system. The reciprocating engine a is connected to the turbine b by gearing c and a fluid coupling d. An oil pump g transfers oil from the sumps of the gear drives c to a supply tank k whence it passes to a pump which delivers to the pipe l through a 'pressure-regulating valve m having a bye-pass t back to the supply tank. Oil passes by way of valves n and o respectively to the lubricating system by pipe u, and through a control valve p to a hydraulic coupling d and a cylinder r for the operation of a steam valve e. To reverse the plant the valve p is closed, the oil pressure fails in cylinder r and the valve e is moved to lead the exhaust steam from engine a to the condenser f and at the same time the coupling d empties. When the valve p is opened the coupling fills and subsequently as the oil pressure builds up in the cylinder r the valve e is moved over to lead the steam to the turbine through a regulating valve q. In an alternative construction a throttle valve causes the oil pressure in cylinder r to open valve e a little and run-up the turbine before the coupling is filled. An emergency regulator z causes the valve e to close if the turbine reaches a dangerous speed. The stop valve s may be arranged to close if the oil pressure in the pipe l fails. The automatic valve o maintains the oil pressure in the pipe l above a predetermined value during the filling of the coupling d and the reducing valve n maintains constant the pressure of the oil passing to the lubricating points. Valves o and n may be replaced by constrictions in the pipes.
