Opening by cutting.-A device for cutting out the ends of cans comprises a base 1 of strip metal, standing on end, with a narrowed portion 3 in which the pillar 4, preferably of channelsection, is pivoted at 5. The pillar is provided with a series of holes 14 to act as fulcra for a lever 15 which passes through a hole 13 in the web of a U-shaped cutter holder 10, the limbs of which are perforated to slide on the pillar 4. To the web of the cutter holder are attached a cutter 11 and a guide plate 12 which is formed transversely to bear on the can at two points spaced apart the maximum width of the cutter. The lever 15, which is preferably flattened and widened at 18 for separate use, may be held in position by a spring wire 16 crossing the periphery of the hole 13 and engaging in a reduced diameter 17. The pillar may be retained in the vertical position by a pin 6, which passes into a block 7 in the foot of the pillar, engaging the notches 8 in the sprung end of the base portion 3. The end of the base portion may be hollowed out at 2 to give clearance for cans which are being opened while lying horizontally.
