Abstract
316,750. Boot's Pure Drug Co., Ltd., and Marshall, J. July 6, 1928. Acyl and alkyl phenols.-Acyl derivatives of monoalkyl ethers of catechol are obtained by heating the said monoalkyl ethers or their esters with fatty acids in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride. The acyl group takes up the pposition to the alkoxyl group. In examples, 5- propionylguaiacol is made from guaiacol or guaiacol propionate and propionic acid, the propionyl ester of 5-propionyl guaiacol being formed as an intermediate product, and 5-acetylguaiacol from guaiacol and acetic acid. The acyl groups may be reduced to alkyl groups, for example, by the Clemmensen process, with amalgamated zinc and hydrochloric acid. The products are of therapeutic value.
