Abstract

306,132. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Cellulose carboxylates. - Cellulose esters of saturated organic acids are dissolved or suspended in an indifferent medium and treated' with a chlorinating agent, whereby chlorination can be effected, if desired, until all the hydrogen atoms of the acid radical of the cellulose carboxylate have been substituted by chlorine. The cellulose halogen carboxylates show increased stability towards hydrolytic agents and possess enhanced solubility. In examples, cellulose triacetate dissolved in tatrachlorethane is treated with phosphorous pentachlorideand the purified products, obtained by pouring the mixture into ethanol and washing the precipitate with ethanol and ether, contain from 5.0 to over 53 per cent of chlorine and are soluble in acetone; cellulose triacetate is dissolved in a mixture of chloroform and tetrachlorethane, phosphorous trichloride is added and the mixture exposed to sunlight whilst chlorine is passed into it to give a product containing 31 per cent of chlorine and soluble in acetone, chloroform, bromoform, ethyl acetate or hot benzene; cellulose trilaurate dissolved in a mixture of tetrachlorethane and carbon tetrachloride is heated with phosphorous pentachloride and the purified product, obtained by pouring the mixture into ethanol, kneading the precipitate several times with ethanol and repeatedly redissolving the chlorinated ester in ether and reprecipitating it with ethanol, contains about 16.5 per cent of chlorine.
