Abstract

Paddle propellers. -A paddle propeller, the axis of which moves in a closed circuit and is feathered by revolving half a revolution on its axis, is characterized in that the feathering motion is effected bv means of two toothed wheels in direct engagement, one being connected with the paddle, the other being connected with the control shaft, adjustment of which alters the phase of the feathering motion. The paddle 8 universally mounted at 16, Fig. 1, has a cranked connection 2 with a driving shaft 1. Keyed to the paddle is an internal bevel 6 which gears directly with a bevel 4 in the 2 1 ratio. The bevel 4 is mounted on a hollow control rod 3 adjustment of which alters the phase. In a modification, spur wheels replace the bevel wheels and the paddle is connected by universal joints with the driving means. In a further modification the driving shaft is hollow and the control shaft mounted inside. In place of toothed gearing, the paddle may carry a block 6, Fig. 8, having crossgrooves and the control shaft may carry a block 4 having two units 10 adapted to slide in the said grooves. By this means the 2 : 1 ratio is obtained for feathering.
