Abstract
315,595. Johnson, J. Y., (1. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 11, 1928. Butadiene is prepared by treating 1 : 3-butylene glycol with red phosphorus dispersed in or deposited on another solid substance which may be a catalyst or a carrier. Ordinary red phosphorus or the bright red modification may be employed in admixture with dehydrating catalysts, such as sodium phosphate or potassium aluminium sulphate, or with dispersing agents such as pumice stone or porcelain balls. The vapours of the glycol may be employed alone or mixed with other vapours or gases such as nitrogen, and the process may be carried out at ordinary, increased or reduced pressure, and preferably at a temperature between 275‹ and 325‹ C. Examples are given of the use of (1) granular pumice charged with ordinary red phosphorus which has been previously washed with caustic soda lye and dried; (2) mono-sodium phosphate or potassium aluminium sulphate activated by the addition of about 5 per cent of red phosphorus.
