Abstract
306,998. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 1, 1927. Potassium and zinc nitrates metallic nitrates in general.-Metallic nitrites, in aqueous solution or in the presence of water, are converted into nitrates by action thereon of oxygen or oxygencontaining gases under pressure at a temperature exceeding 150‹ C. A catalyst, such as an alkali hydroxide, may be used to accelerate the reaction, and a mixture of nitrite and nitrate, obtained as by the action of nitrous gases on the corresponding oxide or carbonate, may be used in the process. According to examples :-An aqueous solution of potassium nitrite is treated with oxygen at 160‹ C. under a pressure of 15 atmospheres; an aqueous solution of mixed. potassium nitrite and nitrate is treated with oxygen at 160‹ C. under a pressure of 14 atmospheres; a mixture of potassium nitrite and a solution of caustic potash is treated with oxygen at 160‹ C under a pressure of 15 atmospheres; and an aqueous solution of zinc nitrite and nitrate is treated with oxygen at 170‹ C. under a pressure of 20 atmospheres.
