Devulcanizing.-Scrap rubber is treated at atmospheric pressure with a hot solution of a caustic alkali in one or more polyhydric alcohols until it can be sheeted. In an example, sodium hydroxide is dissolved in glycerol at a temperature above 100‹ C., and tyre scrap is treated with the resulting solution, consisting of the glyceroxide of the metal in excess of glycerol, at 190‹ to 200‹ C. for eight hours.
