Abstract
305,133. Soc. Industrielle de Ferblanterie. Jan. 31, 1928, [Convention date]. Mechanical toys. - In a toy automobile controlled from a distance by a single flexible transmission of the Bowden wire type, a single sliding bar operated by the wire is employed for starting, stopping, steering, and reversing the toy. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the Bowden wire 1 is connected at one end to a spring-retracted bar 17 slidable longitudinally of the toy, and at its other end is attached to a bell-crank 3 operably connected to a control wheel 10 through a spindle 9, crank 8 and link 7. The sheath 2 is secured at one end to the frame of the toy, and at the other to a casing 5 carrying the wheel 10 and adapted to be held in the hand of the operator. Steering of the toy is effected by a link 17<a> connecting the forward end of the bar 17 with an arm 50 on one of the stub-axles. The toy is propelled by a spring motor 30, the shaft 29 of which carries an arm 28 that, when the bar 17 is in its forward position, is engaged at its end 47 by a shoulder 27 on the bar to stop the motor. Reversal of the direction of movement of the toy is effected by a longitudinal movement of a shaft 31, that is arranged coaxially with the shaft 29 and is provided with two bevel wheels 32, 33 for alternative engagement with a bevel wheel 35 on the driving axle 25. The shaft 31 is connected to the motor shaft 29 through a disc 37 carried by the shaft 31 and apertured to receive a pin 36 projecting from the arm 28. The shaft 31 is normally held in its forward position by a spring-pressed lever 39, that is pivoted at 40 and provided at its free end with jaws 38 enclosing the rim of the disc 37. The lever 39 is moved rearwardly upon alternate forward movements of the bar 17, by the co-operation of a pawl 45 thereon, with a ratchet wheel 43 carrying pins 42 that engage the lever. In a modified form of the toy, Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the spring 30 drives a wheel 61 geared to a centrifugal governor 66 enclosed in a casing 67 pivoted at 68. In the forward position of the bar 17 an abutment 70 thereon displaces the casing relatively to the governor and stops the motor. Reversal is effected by the rocking of a plate 73 by a cam 75 that is mounted on a shaft 76 and operated from the bar 17 by a pawl 78 and ratchet wheel 77. In one position of the plate the wheel 61 is connected to the driving axle 25 through a pinion 62 and gears 63, 71, 35; and in the other position through pinion 72a and gears 72, 35. Steering of the toy is effected through a spring retracted bell-crank lever 52, Fig. 6, operably connected to a rod 54 connecting the stub axles. The connection between the Bowden wire and the wheel 10 comprises a rack 3a attached to the wire, and a pinion on the spindle 9.
