Abstract

897,336. Toys. MULLER, W. H., [trading as SCHREYER & CO.]. Aug. 8, 1960 [Aug. 7, 1959], No. 27420/60. Class 132(3) An automobile toy has mounted the effigy of a driver, the arms and head of which are movable, the hand of one arm being connected with the steering wheel, or the like, to partake in the movements thereof while the hand of the other arm is connected with a control element such as a gear change lever to partake in the movement of such element which derives its motion from the motor of the vehicle through a suitable transmission and the head is adapted to swivel and also derives its turning motion through the transmission. The movements of the arms 3, 4, head 1, steering shaft 19 and gear change lever 6 are controlled by a lever 15 pivoted at 16. A motor 17 drives a disc 9, having a pin engaging in a slot 14 in the lever 15, through a reduction gear train 8 a worm and wormwheel 10, 11 and a Maltese cross wheel 12 forming part of a Geneva stop mechanism. An arm 20 which engages the hub of the gear lever 6 extends through the lever 15. The lever 15 also pivotally engages a crank arm 21 secured to the head 1. The torso 2 has a drive member 22 engageable by the crank cam 21 after the head has swivelled a certain distance. One end of the lever pivotally engages with an arm 17 which extends from a disc mounted on the steering shaft 19 to move the wheels 18 and steering wheel 5. The direction of the motor may be reversed by axial movement of a spindle 26 by a control lever 23, pivoted at 25 to the body and contacting a cam 24 on the disc. The movement of the spindle 26 moves a reversing gear into the gear train. The spindle may be moved manually. An auxiliary lever 28 for moving the parts pivots on the lever 23. The lever 28 pivotally mounts a lever at one end, the lever having a toothed quadrant meshing with a gear on an extended hub of the gear lever 6. A toothed quadrant 30 along the length of the lever 28 meshes with a gear 31 at the end of the hollow shaft which mounts the torso 2, this movement being in addition to that produced by the crank arm 21. Raising the lever 28 disengages it. Reverse travel may be effected by a control lever contacting a cam on the disc and operating a switch which changes the poles of the motor. The vehicle may be remote controlled by operating a handle 41 disconnecting the automatic drive from the wheels 18 and steering shaft and connecting the remote control. A threeway switch may be used to switch on the motor for operation with automatic control and for forward and reverse travel with remote control. The reduction gearing may provide different speed ratios either by automatic control mechanism or manually.
