Abstract

293,921. Ellis, R. E., (Addison, H.). April 23, 1927. Angle-measuring instruments.-In navigational triangle-solving apparatus of the kind described in Specifications 253,758, 264,755 and 273,198, [all in Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.], comprising at least three aims movable about the centre of a circular base, one or more of the arms are extended diametrically across the base and provided with sights to enable the arms to be set by direct observation. In the form shown the instrument comprises three arms e, f, g, all extending diametrically across the base c and attached to rings s rotatably mounted on the base. The arms are provided with cursors j, m, l, connected by pantograph links k. Clamps q, r are provided for the arms and cursors respectively. The arms e, f are provided with sights t for sighting in a horizontal direction and may also be provided with apertures u with crosswires &c. for sighting vertically. The instrument may be mounted rotatably over the bowl w of a compass so that the sights u can be used to set any desired diameter of the base c parallel to the fore-and-aft line of the ship. An additional graduated disc may be mounted so as to be rotatable relatively to the base, in order to enable both true and magnetic bearings to be read off. The graduated disc or discs may be provided with parallel ruled lines serving as auxiliary means for measuring the angle made by the line joining any of the cursors with the zero line of the base. To facilitate independent adjustments of the arms, means may be provided for disconnecting any of the cursors from the pantograph.
