Abstract

122,643. Marion, A. V. F. Aug. 20,1917, [Convention date]. Protractors. - A compass which may also be used as a protractor, is fitted with a fixed degree scale, and also with a movable concentric scale, the movable scale being geared to a rotatable blade pivoted at the centre of the instrument in such a manner that rotation of the blade rotates the movable scale through the same angle in an opposite direction. The compass has a fixed scale F with reference line x-x on the glass base, and also a rotatable scale H which carries a rack gearing through pinions M with a second rack carried by a blade J marked with scale of distance and slotted for ruling lines on a map. Readings are made on the fixed scale F by means of a pointer J<1> on the blade, or on the movable scale H by a fixed pointer I.
