Wood and like wind instruments.-An instrument with a straight or curved body and a reed or other mouthpiece has a trapezoidal longitudinal slot c closable for any length from the mouthpiece end by a runner g which slides on a guide k and presses the rear portion of a rubber strip d into the slot by means of a roller i, the forward portion of the strip being held cut of the slot by a roller h and a spring e. The rubber d may be backed by a steel or leather strip d', and may be pressed into the slot by hand. The movement of the runner may be limited by adjustable stops.
