[Class 88 (ii)] In a waistless violin or like instrument the belly is, on each side of a central longitudinal portion under the strings, abruptly sloped down towards the back to the edges of which it is secured forming an angular or blunt wedgeshaped border. Figs. 1, 2, 3 show one construction in plan and side and end views, in which the belly is arched transversely, the back being formed of two flat portions e, e<1> inclined as shown, united to the belly with filling blocks g. The arch may be cylindrical or conical. The belly may also be reversely curved at the edge a<2> forming an ogee section. The instrument may be made of wood, papier-mÔchÚ or metal, the belly and back being each formed either of separate sections, or from a single piece grooved for bending. Screw string-tensioning devices k<1> may be fitted. Other variations in the shape of the body, of which an example is shown in Figs. 17, 19, are described ; one or both ends may be rounded, and the filling pieces g may be omitted ; the side portions a<1> of the belly may be folded both longitudinally and transversely.
