Abstract

282,418. Parker, R. B. Dec. 14, 1926, [Covention date]. Retorts and methods of working.-The position of the gas outlets at the top of a retort is varied to prevent channelling in the charge. A casing 14 encloses a hopper 18 supported by a conduit 16 having superposed openings 19 over which move sliding gates 20 operated by hand wheels 23. The openings are uncovered in sequence to control the part of the charge from which the gas is removed, and the effective column of material within the retort through which the gas flows is varied. The distillates escape through outlets 17. Heating fines 11 are provided and communicate with chambers 9, 7 and 10. Heated gas or liquid may be supplied to chambers 7 and 10 and removed from chamber 12, or, air and an inflammable gas may be supplied and burned in chamber 9.
