Packing cigarettes and the like in cartons.-Relates to machines, for packing cigarettes and the like, and of the type in which an article such as a batch of cigarettes is moved by a continuouslv moving endless conveyer towards a second similar conveyer acting transversely. According to the invention, each batch is moved from a stationary position at the end of the path of the first conveyer and into the path of the second conveyer by the action of an oncoming batch on the first conveyer. As shown, and as applied to a machine such as is described in Specification 169,341, a pusher 5 on a conveyer 1 forwards a batch towards a second conveyer 2. During this first movement, the batch may be moved into contact with foil, which may be fed and cut by mechanism such as is described in Specification 165,891, may be wrapped in the foil to form a U-shaped block ended container 3 open at one end, and may be moved into engagement with a pair of rotary side tuckers actuated as described in Specification 214,792. The tuckers first carry the wrapped cigarettes away from the pusher piece 5 and then form two side tucks in the open end of the container. The package now arrives at a position between upper and lower guide plates 6, 7 adjacent to the second conveyer and remains stationary while a vertical tucker 8 turns down the upper broad end flap of the container. The pusher piece 5 is adapted to depress the lower end flap as it moves down below the bed of the machine. The next succeeding batch now pushes the forward batch on to the second conveyer 2, a slide 13 having been fed into position by rollers 14, 15. The sides of the slide may be folded upwardly by the rollers 15 and may be held in position by a movable guide 17 during the advance of the batch. A cam 18 lifts the guide 17 while a pusher 19 on the conveyer 2 feeds away the slide and batch for insertion into a shell by mechanism such as is described in Specification 169,341. During this feed, the end flaps of the slide and, consequently, the lower flap of the foil, are turned up by suitable folding mechanism. The shell may be opened by the mechanism described in Specification 266,834, [Class 18, Boxes &c.], and the foil may be embossed by the device described in Specification 269,981.
