Abstract

691,750. Wrapping cigarettes. JACKSON, D. R. P., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Sept. 5, 1951 [Sept. 5, 1950], No. 21857/50. Class 94(i) A wrapping machine for forming block-ended wrappings open at one end of the kind in which one of the side folds is made first and then a narrow tuck and then the final side fold comprises means for moving an article against a strip of wrapping material located tranversely of the path of the article and then between top and bottom plates which form the wrapper into a U about the article and thereafter between a pair of narrow side tuckers. Mechanically operated tuckers are arranged to move downwards and forwards with and over the sides of the article and fold the parts of the strip extending laterally in the plane of that face of the article nearer to said tuckers to form one pair of long side folds said tuckers being positioned and shaped to finish folding said side folds just before the narrow tucks are being formed whereby the side folds lie adjacent to the sides of the article and the narrow tucks lie on the outside of said side folds. A batch 5 of cigarettes is moved by a pusher 4 on an endless conveyer between two thin side plates 11 which are carried by a bar 10 reciprocated by a cam-operated link 16. The plates 11 thus move along with the batch 5 as it engages a strip I ot wrapping material positioned across its path, a rear guide 8 of the strip being pivotally moved away from a front guide 7 as this takes place so that movement of the strip with the batch is unhindered. The batch 5 and side plates 11 then carry the wrapper with them under a top plate 6 which, with the bed of the machine, folds the wrapper into a U about the batch. Pivoted tucker members 22, actuated by cam operated link means 28, 30, then move down on either side of the top plate 6 to engage and fold down over the strips 11 the top horizontally extending side portions of the wrapper. The end tucks are next formed to lie on said folded down portions, as the batch moves forward between long narrow stationary side tuckers 21, the side plates 11 having been withdrawn, and the bottom side portions of the wrapper are then folded up by stationary folders 33 positioned at the end of the tuckers 21.
