Abstract
280,652. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., Shepherds on, A., and Thornley, S. Aug. 24, 1926. Dibenzanthrone dyes. - Bluish-grey to black vat-dyestuffs are produced by treating with hydroxylamine and then subjecting to alkali fusion the sulphonic acids of benzanthrone or substituted benzanthrones. such as methyl- or chlor-benzanthrone, whether obtained by synthesis from anthraquinone sulphonic acids or by direct sulphonation as described in Specification 276,766. The sulphonation and treatment with hydroxylamine may be effected in the same sulphuric acid. According to examples, (1) benzanthrone sulphonic acid prepared according to example 1 of Specification 276,766 is treated in sulphuric acid solution at 150‹ C. with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and ferrous sulphate: the product is poured into water, salted out, and subjected to caustic potash fusion; (2) benzanthrone is sulphonated with weak oleum, and the reaction mixture diluted slightly and treated directly with hydroxylamine by hydrochloride and ferrous sulphate as in example 1. As parent materials are also specified methylbenzanthrone (M.Pt. 197- 199‹ C.) from 2.methylanthraquinone, and Bz1- chlorbenzanthrone. The hydroxylamine may be in the form of the solution obtained by electrolytic reduction of nitric acid. Specification 276,767 also is referred to.
