Abstract

275,215. Rauzieres, P. E. F. July 29, 1926, [Convention date]. Diamond and like tools.-In tool-holders for holding cutters made of alloys with a base of tungsten, chromium, &c. or of substances such as corundum, sapphire or diamond, the cutters are gripped by jaws in a self-aligning manner so as to prevent their fracture by uneven pressures. In one form the cutter 6, Fig. 3, is supported by the top plane surface 5 of a block 4 having a spherical seating 3 in the tool-holder 1 and is gripped by a cap 7 and a central bolt 10. The rear end of the cap is supported by two screws 14 adjustable to suit the thickness of the cutter and the latter has inclined surfaces 6<1>, 6<2> which cause it, on being gripped, to be pushed rearwardly against a stop piece 16 held against the cap by a plate spring 15 and pins 17. In a modification the cutter 6, Fig. 7, has an inclined rear surface for engaging the stop 16 in such a manner that the rearward thrust P will have a vertical component R to press the stop against the cap and relieve a spring washer 30 from compression. The screws 14 may be replaced by balls 20 or by a cylinder. In another modification the block 4 is replaced by two blocks having cylindrical surfaces with the axes at right angles to each other, the blocks being both below the cutter or one below and one above. In a further modification the block is replaced by a conical block whose flat base engages the under surface of the cutter and whose apex seats in a hole formed in the holder 1.
