Machine cutters, grinding in situ. - A device for grinding the rotary knife 11 of a slicing machine consists of a grinding-wheel 14 for grinding the bevelled face of the knife-edge and a wheel 24 for treating the flat face of the edge, the wheels when out of use being disposed in a housing 7 and located on the same. side of the knife. The grinding-wheel 14 is carried by a spindle 13 rotatable in a boss 7<c> on the housing and is pressed towards the knife by a spring 17. A knob 16 on the spindle has pins 16<a> thereon, which engage slots 7<d> in the boss when the grinding wheel is in operation, and which engage recesses 7f on the boss when the wheel is withdrawn from the knife. The finishing-wheel 24 is carried eccentrically on a disc 22 formed on a spindle 20 slidable and rotatable in a bush 19, slots 20<a>, in the spindle and a pin 19<b> in the bush locating the wheel in inoperative or operative positions; the slots end in an annular slot 20<c> which allows the spindle 20 to be turned. The wheel is angularly adjustable by means of pins 19<a> on the bush 19, which engage brackets 18 on the housing 7, and screws 26 which engage ears 19<c> on the bush 19. The housing is adjustably mounted on the boss 8 forming the knife bearing by means of a right and left handed screw 9.
