Abstract
167,715. Robinson, O., Felce, D. F., and Berkel & Parnall's Slicing Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1920. Machine cutters) grinding in situ.-The rotary knife A, Fig. 1, of a slicing-machine is sharpened by two grinding-discs 14, 21 carried by a head 8 which is pivoted at 7 on a bracket 1 mounted on the machine, the grinders being movable into and out of operative position, in a direction transversely of the edge of the knife, by a simple throwover of the head about its pivot. The head 8 is pivoted to a stem 3 adjustably mounted in the bracket 1, and has a projection 9 movable in a recessed part 10 of a quadrant 6 secured to the stem, the ends 11 of the recess limiting the movement of the head; the head may also be clamped in any position by screwing up the pivot pin. The grinder 14 is carried by a spindle 13 rotatably carried by a sleeve 26, which is slidable and turn. able in a boss 12 on the head and which is slid therein by a piece 27 to bring the disc into or out of contact with the knife, the piece 27 being rotated to engage notches in an adjustable plate 28 to lock the grinder in position. The head has also a hollow part 15, in which is slidable a stem 16 having an arm 18 thereon; the stem is pressed outwardly by a spring 17. The arm carries a sleeve 32 in which is rotatably and slidably mounted the spindle 20 of the grinder 21, a spring 33 pressing the grinder outwardly and a stop 36 limiting its movement. The arm is moved to bring the grinder up to or away from the knife by a plate 22 secured to the arm and having a finger-piece 25, movement being limited by a slot 23 in the plate and a screw 24. In a modification, the device for moving the grinder 21 comprises a plate secured to the arm 18 and bearing along the top of the part 15. The end of the plate is bent up to form a finger-piece and has a guideslot engaged by a pin secured to the part 15. In another modification, the stem 3 is adjusted in the bracket 1 by a nut 43, Fig. 5, and is made hollow to contain a spring-pressed plunger 45 having a member 46 thereon. The head 8 has a contactpiece 48 provided with two faces substantially at right-angles to each other and adapted to engage the member 46 when the head is moved to the operative or to the inoperative position. The grinder 21 runs in ball bearings in the arm 18, which is movable by a place constructed as described in the first modification. The grinder 14 runs in ball bearings 49a in a sleeve 26a, which is slidable in a sleeve 50 secured in the boss 12; the grinder is moved by a nut 62 screwing on the spindle of the grinder, and a spring 53 allows resilient contact between the grinder and the knife. In operation, the head 8 is thrown over about its pivot to the operative position, shown in full lines, and the grinders are moved separately or simultaneously into contact with the knife, being rotated by their frictional contact therewith. The grinder 14 grinds the bevelled face of the knife, and the grinder 21 removes the wire edge. After sharpening, the head is thrown over to the position shown in dotted lines.
