Anthraquinonethiazoles. - The process of the parent Specification, according to which vat dyestuffs are produced by heating with sulphur a mixture of 2-methylanthraquinone or an w-halogen derivative thereof with an aromatic p-diamine, is modified by substituting for the latter a primary aromatic diamine other than a p-diamine. According to examples, 2-methylanthraquinone is heated with sulphur and 1 : 5-naphthylenediamine, m-phenylenediamine, or diaminobenzanthrone (see Specification 10770/07, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.]); the products are freed from sulphur and purified first by heating with sulphuric acid, with or without an oxidizing agent, such as chromic acid or a nitrite, and then by heating with an alkaline oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite; they dye cotton from the vat in yellow to brown-orange shades.
