Abstract

Covered boxes; corner strengthening - pieces. - A continuous method of covering boxes or box blanks with previously formed individual cover sheets or wrappers having reinforcing tabs for the corners of the box, comprises rendering the box-engaging face of a wrapper adhesive over its entire surface or a tab-carrying portion thereof, and simultaneously or subsequently applying tabs thereto, then rendering adhesive any remaining unadhesive portions of the wrapper and the box-engaging faces of the tabs if they have not been already so rendered, and then applying the tabbed wrapper to a box &c. before any of the adhesive has dried or set. As shown in Fig. 3, the wrapper W is coated with adhesive, and, while wet, is supplied with tabs T from rolls R or stacks T<1>, the box-engaging faces of the tabs then being supplied with adhesive and the wrapper immediately applied to the box; additional tabs for reinforcing the bottom or top edges of the ends of the box or both top and bottom edges may be used. The box-engaging faces of the tabs may be supplied with adhesive before the tabs are applied to the wrapper. The wrapper and tabs may have been previously supplied with adhesive which has dried and to which water or other solvent is applied just prior to the application of the tabs to the wrapper and the tabbed wrapper to the box, or dry or powdered adhesive material may be applied to the wrapper and tabs and rendered pliable and adhesive by heat just prior to the above operations. Specifications 19967/01, 8230/04, 10167/06, and 4526/13 are referred to, and the apparatus described in Specification 254,684 is stated to be particularly applicable for carrying out the above methods.
