Abstract

Covered boxes; corner strengthening-pieces.- In the preparation of cover sheets composed of several parts and the application thereof to boxes or box blanks, the composite cover sheets are prepared continuously and applied in succession to the boxes, the several components of the cover sheet being adhesively connected together, the face thereof being rendered adhesive and the composite cover being then fed to a wrapping machine and attached to the box &c. before any of the adhesive has had time to dry or set. As shown in Fig. 2, the components 1 - - 4 are brought into correct relation and the edges of the components 3, 4 are rolled back while adhesive a is applied to the components 1, 2; the components 3, 4 are then brought into engagement with the components 1, 2 and secured thereto by the adhesive, Fig. 3; the box-engaging faces of the cover sheet are then coated with adhesive and the sheet immediately fed to a wrapping- machine and applied in the usual way to a box or box blank B, Fig. 5; in the case of a box blank strengthening tabs T may be applied to the cover sheet. The box-engaging faces of the cover components may be coated with adhesive before they are secured together, and the tabs may be applied to the components of the cover sheet either before or after they are secured together. The cover components and tabs may have been previously supplied with adhesive which has dried and to which water or other solvent is applied just prior to the application of the components to each other, the tabs to the cover and the tabbed cover to the box; or dry powdered adhesive material may be applied to the cover components and tabs and rendered - pliable and adhesive by heat just prior to the above operations. The covering or wrapping machine may be of the kind described in Specifications 19967/01 or 8230/04 but the whole of the operations are preferably carried out by the apparatus described in Specification 254,684; Specification 264,449 is referred to.
