Abstract

Electromagnetic switches. - An electromagnetically operated device such as a contactor of a motor controller is provided with a movable shortcircuited coil or ring 18, Fig. 4, inductively repelled or attracted by a winding 17 which is connected to a part of the circuit subject to varying current or potential in order to delay the movement of the electromagnet armature 10 until such variation is reduced to a given rate. For use in starting a motor 22, Fig. 1, two relays 27, 27a with retarding rings 18, 18<a> on the armature 10, 10<a> control accelerating contactors 25, 26, the rate-of-change windings 17, 17<a> being connected across the motor armature and acting by repulsion. In a modified arrangement the windings 17, 17<a> are connected across a section of resistance and act by attraction.
