Abstract
249,130. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Traver, O. C.). March 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Switches partly electromagnetic; t h e r m a l switches. -- The thermal element of a thermal switch is heated by the current induced in it by a varying magnetic field produced e.g. by an alternating current. According to the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the bi-metallic strip 10 has the shape of an annulus which surrounds the core 11 of the electromagnet 15. When the magnet 15 is energized by an alternating current, induced currents circulate round the annulus, heating the strip and causing a contact 13 carried by it to engage a contact 14. This action is assisted by magnetic attraction between the bi-metallic strip 10 which is of magnetic material and an adjustable pole-piece 21, a magnetic insulator 17 serving to produce free poles above and below it. Further adjustment is obtained by moving a plug 18 and pin 19 of magnetic material, up or down. In a modification, the bi-metallic member is in the form of a hollow rectangle surrounding the core.
