Abstract
256,110. Bina, F. C., and Barrey, F. F. Dec. 15, 1925. Pencil holders. - In a pencil holder of the screw-propelling type, the propeller is in the form of an arm arranged transversely to the axis of the holder and bearing transversely on the lead, means being provided for moving the arm out of propelling position to enable a lead to be inserted through an opening in the cap and then returning it into position for ejecting the lead. The propeller is in the form of a staple-like piece of wire 7 having a straight back position slidable in a longitudinal groove 10 in the band 2, an upper projecting portion 8 extending through the coils of a rotatable wire spiral 4 into the central passage, and a lower projecting portion 9 extending into a lower coil of the spiral but not into the central passage. 'The lower end of the spiral rotates on a metal ring 15 in the barrel and the upper end is connected to a disc 5 having peripheral notches engaged by indentations 17 in the operating-cap 3. The spiral is of such a length that it acts as a spring to hold the disc 5 in contact with the cap. The upper end 19 of the spiral is enlarged and rotates freely in a space between the upper end of the barrel and the disc 5. When the portion 8 - of the propeller is retracted beyond the upper end of the barrel, the enlarged part of the spiral turns the propeller on the straight portion lying in the groove 10 to remove the portion 8 out of the central passage. A lead can then be inserted through openings 11, 18 in the cap and disc 5. The cap 3 is rotatably held on the rear end of the barrel by means of a split spring ring 12 engaging grooves in the cap and barrel. The lead is held by means of a split metal tube 21 having a tapered end mounted in the pointed portion of the barrel, and the tube may also be provided with a spring tongue. When the barrel is made of non-metallic or composition material the point may be strengthened with a metal tip having a reduced portion extending into the barrel.
