Abstract

254,892. Rudd, T. W., and Ritchie Hart & Co., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1925. Soldering.-In a solder-bath machine for soldering the ends &c. on tins &c., of the kind in which the article is supported on a member, whose upper edge normally projects above the surface of the solder &c. which is free to move up and down so as to immerse the joint in the solder, an adjustable stop is provided so as to limit the downward movement of the member. The work is placed on the top of a hollow member 14 the edge 14<a> of which normally projects above the surface of the solder in a bath 1 mounted in a heat-insulated casing 2 and heated by gas burners 5 &c. The member, which may float in the solder, is free to move in a guide 13 which is carried by an extension 12 from a ring 11 provided with brackets 10 engaging pins 9 secured to lugs in the bath. The ring 11 keeps the scum formed on the top of the solder clear of the member 14. The article when placed on the member is pressed down, so as to immerse the joint in the solder, against a stop member 16 adjustable on lugs 15 on the ring 11. For soldering small articles the guide 13 may be first fitted with a flanged liner to receive a smaller member. In place of a floating member, a member may be used which may be pressed upwardly by springs, weights, or pneumatic pressure. Springs may be arranged either above or below the member, which in the latter case has means project ing through a packing gland on the bath. The weight may be fixed on a lever, and in the pneumatic arrangement the member may be connected with a plunger working in a cylinder so as to compress the air when it is forced down. According to the Provisional Specifications, the stop may consist of an adjustable screw passing through the bottom of the bath. A run-off cock may also be provided for the bath.
