Abstract

Crank shafts. - In built-up crank shafts, the crank pins are received in bores of the crank members, which are provided with slots tangential to the bores, and are tightened on the pins by oblique clamping-screws. A four-throw internal-combustion shaft comprises webs 1 - - 4 carrying pins 10 - - 13, the ends whereof are clamped in the intermediate disc-members 5, 6 by oblique screws 14, which, in addition to compressing the tangential slots 15, cause the metal virtually to rotate about those parts of the bores which are diametrically opposite to the ends of the slots. In assembling, the web 2. carrying a roller-bearing race 7, is first aligned with the web 3 and connected thereto by a conical joint 8 and nut 9; the crank pins are then loosely entered in the members 5, 6, and the shaft is supported, with its bearings, in the crank case, in order to position the pins, which are then clamped. The pins may be more accurately aligned by rotating the shaft before tightening the screws 14. Conical pins 17 are provided to facilitate re-assembling.
