Abstract

252,486. Birmingham Small Arms Co., Ltd., and Norman, G. March 9, 1925. Machine guns.-A machine gun is provided with trigger mechanism and with breech-operating mechanism operable by either hand. The trigger mechanism comprises two triggers mounted in side grips and acting on a single stirrup lever adapted to operate the sear. The breech-operating mechanism comprises two charging handles, one on each side. As shown., the gun has two hand grips 1 mounted on the sides of the breech casing and inclined outwardly to the rear. In each grip is a trigger 2 having a projecting nose acting on a single stirrup lever 5 mounted by trunnions 6. The stirrup lever acts on a sliding rod 8 which actuates the pivoted sear 10, Fig. 5. Each grip is provided with a pivoted safety lever acting on the trigger and provided with a thumb-piece 17 for operating it. A sear safety comprising a rotatable bolt 18 having a projection 19 is also provided. The breech-bolt sleeve can be drawn back by hand by either of the handles 20, each of which has a lug engaging a lug on the sleeve. Either handle can be locked to the sleeve by a bolt 24, Fig. 9, adapted to be pressed against a spring into engagement with a hole in the bolt-sleeve. The handles are normally held in their forward position by the inclined forward edges of hinged plates 22 which cover the longitudinal slots in the casing. The plates are raised when the charging handles are drawn back.
