Wedging or jamming. -A plug cock or valve having jamming and lubricating means comprises inside cooperating cam means, such as inclined surfaces 11 on the plug and corresponding inclined surfaces on a ring 13, for jamming the plug into its seat when the valve is closed. A resilient washer 19 with a packing facing 22 of metal is interposed between the cam ring 13 and the cover 14 and bears also on the shoulder at the neck of the plug. An annular resilient gasket 23 in the packing gland also bears on the inner edge of the washer 19 and serves to hold the plug yieldingly to its seat in the open position of the cock. The plug is provided with a central lubricant passage 30 radial passages 29, and surface grooves 28 terminating in a bottom chamber 32. In either the closed or open positions of the cock when the screw 31 is screwed down the pressure of the lubricant at the grooves 28 forces up the plug against the yielding pressure of the gasket 23 and washer 19 so that the lubricant oozes out on each side of the grooves 28 along the whole length of the plug.
