Abstract
339,889. Merco Nordstrom Valve Co., (Assignees of Nordstrom, S. J.). Feb. 26, 1929, [Convention date]. Plug cocks; wedging or jamming ; casings.-In a lubricated rotary plug valves for fluids containing condensible constituents destructive to the lubricant, the inlet and outlet casing passages are sloped or expanded from the plug, and the plug passage itself is shaped, so as to drain away condensible constituents from the edges of the lubricant film when the valve is used in any position with the axis of the passages substantially horizontal. Figs. 1 and 4 show an arrangement in which the.passages 11, 12 and the plug passage 17 are flared vertically and horizontally irom the centre of the plug, so that the valve can be used in any position in which the passage axis is horizontal. In a modification, adapted for use with the plug axis vertical, the lower surfaces only of the pasages in the plug and casing are sloped downwards from the centre of the plug. In both arrangements, the plug 16 is held to its seat by a diaphragm 23 pressed against the plug by resilient packing rings 26, as shown. A lubricant chamber 32 in the plug stem 21 is separated by a check valve 37 from an upper chamber 34 fitted with a screw 36 by means of which pressure can be put upon the lubricant to force it through arcuate passages 28 in the plug and longitudinal grooves 31 in the casing. A groove 43 in the plug opens into a chamber 41 below the plug so that when sufficient pressure of lubricant is supplied the plug can be lifted from its seating to facilitate turning.
