Holders. - Gas holders are fitted with removable or permanently attached containers suitable for receiving liquid or solid weights for increasing the pressure of the gas in the holders. Fig. 1 shows a container d provided at its upper edge with flanges e for attachment to the dome b of the top lift a of a gas holder. The container is also supported by angle-irons k connecting it to the usual framing m strengthening the top curb of the holder. When a liquid is to be used for weighting purposes a pipe provided with a control cock may be led through the container lid h to allow the liquid to be pumped or siphoned away when not required. Alternatively, a valve may be provided in the bottom of the container to allow the liquid to be drained into the holder tank below. When solid weights such as angle-irons are to be employed, supporting ledges and cross-plates may be provided in the tank. When weighting substances such as sand, iron filings, &c. are to be used the container may be provided with a false bottom or a movable door which may be opened by means of chains or rods to allow the substances to fall into the tank below.
