Abstract
247,433. Suits, S. May 6, 1925. Designs. producing; shearing.-In machines for cutting designs in compressible sheet material such as pile fabric and of the kind in which a roll presses portions of the pile into depressions in a design roll for severance by a knife, the presser roll 3 is adjustably mounted and is pressed towards the design roll 1 by a yieldably mounted driving-roll 29. The rolls are geared to have the same peripheral speeds. The portions of pile pressed into the depressions 2 of the roll 1 are severed hy a band knite 6 arranged to make an obtuse angle with the line joining the centre of the roll 1 and the point of greatest compression of the pile. The knife is kept sharp by engagement with grinding wheels. The severed pile is removed by a suction device 52 the lower edge of which is near the point of severance of the pile. Suitably arranged driving gear is provided for allowing the roller 1 to be changed for one of a different diameter. The driving roller 29 is mounted on arms 32 pressed by springs 36 engaged by eccentric rods 35. A cradle 40 carrying rolls to prevent the roll 29 from sagging is pivoted to levers 41 mounted on springs 45, the ends of the levers being engaged by other eccentrics. By rotating a lever 39 the eccentrics may be turned to release the pressure of the roll against the presser roll 3, and thereby to allow the material to be inserted in the machine.
