Abstract

245,730. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of Lansing, R. P.). Jan. 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Vibration-dampers of the -friction type with multiple discs for vehicles are adapted to operate with greater resistance in one direction than in the other by means of screw mechanism and a spring. The lever 14 connected to the axle is secured to a sleeve 10 which is rotatable on the base plate 1 secured to the frame. A flange projecting inwardly from the hub of the arm 14 is channeled or slotted to provide jaws 32 which engage slots in alternate friction discs. The remaining discs are similarly engaged by jaws 55 on a member 51 connected to the pressure plate 47 which engages a screw on a sleeve 40 mounted on the fixed central spindle 6. The sleeve 40 is movable longitudinally on the spindle 6 but is prevented from rotating thereon by teeth 5. The movement of the plate 47 on the sleeve 40 is limited by a shoulder 60 and a washer 62. A helical spring is held between an end plate 71 on the spindle and a plate 77 which bears on a shoulder on the spindle except when it is engaged by the end of the sleeve 40. For small movement of the arm 14 there is no relative movement of the friction discs, the arm and the pressure plate 47 turning together. When the arm moves through greater angles, the plate 47 engages either the shoulder 60 or the washer 62 and relative movement of the discs takes place. When it engages the shoulder 60, the sleeve 40 is moved longitudinally to engage the plate 77 whereby spring pressure is applied to the discs and checks rebound of the vehicle springs. When the plate 47 engages the washer 62, the relative movement of the discs takes place without thrust between them.
