Abstract
200,812. Laforge, P. July 13, 1922, [Convention date]. Vibration-dampers. - Relates to shock-absorbers for motor vehicles &c. of the kind comprising two juxtaposed relatively rotatable members with co-operating inclined surfaces which are pressed together by the action of a spring, one member being connected to one of the parts between which relative motion is to be controlled and the other member being in frictional engagement with a disc or drum connected to the other of the parts in such a way that free motion is permitted in one direction and retarded motion in the other direction. According to the invention, the two members with co-operating inclined faces and the disc or plate in frictional engagement with one of these members are mounted on a common shaft by means of a key and wedge device which under the action of the spring compensates automatically for any wear occurring between the components. The shock absorber comprises a base-plate 1 securing to the vehicle &c. and a freely rotatable spindle 2 which carries two members 4, 5 which are arranged to coact through three inclined surfaces on each member. The member 4 is in frictional engagement with the base-plate 1, preferably by a washer 3, while the member 5 is connected through an arm 5<d> with the axle. Wear is automatically taken up by means of a spring-controlled wedge 7. The member 5 can turn freely in one direction, but in the other direction the member turns relatively to the member 4 until a screw 9 engages an abutment 4d, the inclined surfaces meanwhile riding on one another. The members then turn together and a braking action is caused by friction between the member 4 and the base-plate 1.
