Abstract

Vibration-dampers.- A friction shock-absorber is constructed to give an approximately constant frictional resistance for a small angular displacement at the mid - position and d an increasing frictional resistance for greater angular displacement on either side of the mid-position. Friction washers 4 are arranged between the disc of one arm 1 and the discs of the other arm 3, and the arm 1 is mounted on a screwed sleeve 7 so that the angular motion of the arm is imparted to the sleeve. The discs of the arm 3 are rotatably mounted on the sleeve 7 and are provided with collars 5 which are arranged to come in contact with abutments 9 on the sleeve 7, a certain amount of play or lost motion being permitted. Nuts 10 are mounted on the sleeve 7 and are provided with spring washers 11 which are adjustably locked to the arm 3 by means of latches 14. On angular movement of the arm 1 and consequently of the sleeve 7, the nuts 10 are traversed and move the discs of the arm 3 until one of the discs comes into contact with an abutment 9 through its collar 5. During this movement, the frictional resistance remains approximately constant. During further angular displacement of the arm 1, one disc of the arm 3 remains stationary, owing to the contact of its collar 5 with an abutment 9, and its spring washer 11 relaxes, while the other disc continues to move axially and its spring washer 11 becomes further compressed thereby increasing the frictional resistance to the angular displacement of the arm 1. Dust caps 12 are provided and the spring washers 11 may be replaced by solid washers with peripheral notches.
