Abstract

Rotary converters; commutators; improving commutation, auxiliary means for.-An apparatus having rotating brushes and a stationary commutator for converting alternating to continuouscurrent or vice versa comprises a stationary laminated magnetic circuit formed of complete discs or rings, each having an inner and an outer series of holes, the conductors being wound uniformly from the inner to the outer series, and the distance f, g between the two series of holes being approximately double the depth e, f or g, h of the iron outside the holes. The alternating-current and the continuous-current windings may be wound in the same or in alternate slots, or a single winding may be employed. The apparatus may be wound for two or more poles, and a lap or a wave connection may be used. Two or more commutators connected in series or in parallel may be provided. Radial or axial commutators can be used. In a preferred arrangement for preventing sparking, Fig. 2, the mica insulation m projects beyond the surface of the bars, but in the centre portion s, t the bars have air spaces between them. The insulated bush of the commutator is made air-tight and is connected to a source of compressed air by means of a pipe p.
