Abstract
242,403. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Macbeth, C., and Dexter, W. J. Oct. 4, 1924. Multiple-indication apparatus.-Apparatus for measuring the thickness of material being worked on the rolls of calenders is provided with means for compensating far changes in external conditions. A contact roller 5 which bears upon a reduced portion 6 of the calender 3, is mounted en an arm 5<a> pivoted on a shaft 2, and carries on its end 5<d> two fluid-containing chambers 10, 10<a>. A second contact roller 4 mounted on arm 4a pivoted on the shaft 2 bears upon the rubber or other material on the roll 3. An arm 4<c> transmits the relative movement of the arm 4a to a plunger 13, which bears upon a diaphragm 11 in the chamber 10. A pipe connects this chamber to a tube 15, the height of the liquid indicating the displacement. The zero to which the adjustable scale 16 is set is determined by the height of liquid in a tube 15<a> connected to the second chamber 10<a>. The roller 5 is held against the calender by a spring or by a cord 8 passing over a pulley 9 and carrying a weight 7. In a modification, Fig. 4, the arm 5d carries a scale 21, and the arm 4a displaces a pointer 18 pivoted to the arm 5d at a point 19. According to the Provisional Specification the pointer may be actuated by rack-andpinion gearing.
