Abstract

1354115 Thickness measuring apparatus BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 23 June 1971 [24 June 1970] 30694/70 Headings G1M and GIN A wire measuring gauge is constructed so as to reduce the risk of damage to the wire and to minimize wear of sensing elements 10, 11 between which the wire passes. The elements are convex surfaced and one, 11, is adjustably mounted and the other 10 secured via bellows 4 to a rigid rod 2 which is supported for rectilinear movement by flexible diaphragms 3 fixedly secured to chassis 17. Rod 2 carries one element 16 of a micro-meter device 14, adjustable by knob 15, which engages the axially adjustable core of a differential transformer tranducer 18 mounted on chassis 17. To set up the apparatus a plug gauge of the predetermined diameter of the wire to be gauged is positioned between elements 10, 11 and knob 15 adjusted until a centre-zero indicator 21 connected to transducer 18 reads zero. Control knob 26 is then adjusted to adjust the tension of spring 23 connected at one end to rod 2 and compensate for gravitational forces on the rod and thus the pressure on the wire by elements 10, 11. In operation wire travelling along A-B is engaged by elements 10, 11 and continuously metered, any variation in diameter of the wire being indicated by appropriate deflection of the pointer of indicator 21.
