Contacting solid resistances. - In an adju6table resistance of the type in which piles of discs of carbon or the like arecompressed by a screwy-actuated cross-bar a spring is interposed between the screw and the cross-bar, a second spring may also be provided which raises the bar and cuts off the current when the pressure is released; the casing may be constructed so as to support the piles of discs. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the bar j is actuated by a collar m on the spindle h through a rubber washer m<1>. The lower end of the spindle p engages with a screwed sleeve t and its motion is limited by a screw u in the sleeve t. A spring h raises the bar f when the pressure is released. The piles of discs a are enclosed in holes in the insulating casing b which gives them lateral support. Brass discs a<1> may be placed on the piles of discs a.
