Abstract
240,537. Lidwill, M. C. July 1, 1924. Inhalers.-Air is supplied under pressure through a pipe 8 and a rotary control valve 10 to a chamber 19 containing the anaesthetic, the mixture of air and vapour passing through a trap 31 to a discharge pipe 22 with which a pressureregulating device 24 communicates. The control valve 10 encloses a rotary drum 9 and has ports 11, 12 with which ports 13, 14 on the drum 9 are adapted to register in such a way that both ports may be partly operative, as shown in Fig. 2, or one may be operated fully to the exclusion of the other. The drum 9 is operated by means of a milled wheel 15, a stop 16 working in a slot 17 being provided to limit the movement of the drum. By adjusting the valve 10 any desired fraction of the air supply is passed to the vessel 19, the remainder passing directly to the discharge pipe 22. The pressure-regulating device 24 comprises a tube open to the atmosphere and filled to a suitable height with mercury and a tube 27 communicating through a conduit 26 with the discharge pipe 22 and dipping below the surface of the mercury. Preferably, the tube 24 is partly closed by a fluted stopper carrying a baffle of cotton wool to prevent loss of mercury. The liquid in the container 19 may be electrically heated.
