D-shaped handles.-Sheet metal handles for spades &c. are formed of two sections, each comprising a curved tubular arm provided at one end with a circular socket for the wooden grip and at the other with a half socket for the handle, the two sections being united so that the two half sockets meet to form a complete socket for the handle, the two tubular arms meet endwise to form a continuous curve, and the two circular sockets are opposed to each other to receive the ends of the wooden grip. Each section of the handle is formed from a sheet metal blank of the shape shown in Fig. 5, the lower end 10<1> forming the half socket 10 for the stem 13, Fig. 2, the intermediate part 11<1> forming the curved tubular arm 11, and the end part 12<1> forming the circular socket 12 for the wooden grip 18. The edges 14 of the middle portion 11<1> of the blank are folded in towards each other so as to meet, and the centre part may be curved so as to give the curved arms A, B a D-shaped cross-section, with the ends of the edges overlying the end of the stem 13. The meeting edges of the parts 10, 11 are suitably united, being preferably butt-welded. Eccentric holes 16 are formed in the bases of the sockets 12 and in the wooden grip 18 to receive the cross-pin 19, the grip being held against rotation.
