Abstract
238,975. Clayton, L. June 6, 1924. Vertical boilers. - A steam generator of the return-tube type comprises a cylindrical casing 1 having a combustion chamber 2 at each end, and a depending cylindrical casing 3 containing a firebox 4. A rectangular uptake 5 divides the boiler into two parts, the upper portions being connected by steam tube stays 6. Leading smoke tubes 7 connect the uptake 5 with the combustion chambers 2, and return tubes 8 connect the combustion chambers 2 with the uptake 5 above the waterway 9. The firebox 4 is corrugated and of the same diameter as the casing 1. A tubular feedwater heater 13 is mounted in the upper part of the uptake 5, and the water is delivered into the annular space surrounding the firebox 3. Steam is drawn off through pines 18 and superheaters 19 to the engine. The exhaust steam passes into a chamber 21 having nozzles 22 to increase the draught.
