Abstract
238,270. Aarts, J. G. April 14. 1924. Extracting.-Spongy iron is produced by conducting finely granulated iron ores by means of stirrers &c. through a furnace in counter current to an ascending stream of reducing gases enriched, before entering the furnace, with hydrocarbons, such as acetylene, which on decomposition will enable active carbon to be deposited on the surface of the ore granules. The temperature at which the gases are admitted to the furnace is maintained below the sintering temperature (about 800‹ C.) of the charge.
