Abstract
176,354. Kiesewalter, A. March 3, 1921, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Electrode furnaces. - calcium hydride is prepared by feeding calcium oxide through an electric are supplied with hydrogen and further treating the product with hydrogen below the arc to ccnvert any free calcium into hydride. Lime is fed through an opening B into a furnace chamber A and falls through an arc between electrodes C<1>, C<2>, C<3>. Hydrogen is supplied through the jackets N of the electrodes. The molten hydride, probably containing free calcium, falls into a well O divided by a partition P into two divisions. The hydride overflows through passages S, Fig. 3, into a chamber T and cools in an atmosphere of hydrogen. The free calcium separates at the bottom of the well O, passes under the partition, and is converted into hydride by hydrogen admitted by a pipe R which dips into the well O. The excess hydrogen passes upwards through the arc and finally escapes by an outlet E and may be purified and used again.
