Abstract
232,173. Koppers Co., (Assignees of Becker, J.). April 10, 1924, [Convention date]. Coke ovens.-Relates to coke ovens of the kind in which the heating-walls are connected in pairs by cross-over ducts as described in Specifications 171,117, 205,459 and 215,306, and comprises arrangements for preventing leakage of gas into the waste gas regenerators, and for securing independent control and uniform heating of the " coke " and " pusher " sides of the battery. The unit section of a battery shown in Fig. 3 consists of three ovens 12, with four heating- walls 11 connected in pairs by the cross-over ducts 26, each heating-wall being in communication with a pair of regenerators 18 for the supply of lean gas and air respectively. The supply arrangements are such that the flow in the two pairs of heating-walls is in opposite directions, i.e. when the flow through the two right-hand walls is clockwise, that in the left-hand walls is anticlockwise, and vice versa. The four inner regenerator chambers, and the two outer pairs therefore operate in different phases, and as producer gas is supplied to the two innermost and the two outermost chambers of the group of eight, an air chamber A is always interposed between a producer-gas chamber P and a waste-gas chamber W. The " coke " and " pusher sides of the battery are fired independently of one another, the regenerators and heating-walls being divided by partitions at about the median vertical plane of the battery, and each half-wall group of flues is further subdivided into three smaller groups, each with its own cross-over duct leading from near the middle of the length of the corresponding horizontal collector flue 25. By this arrangement the flues 25 need not be of large capacity, and are preferably of the wide shallow form shown. The oven may be fired alternatively by rich gas supplied through conduits 30 and nozzles 32. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the partition between similarly-functioning regenerator chambers may be omitted, and where two or more units are joined up with an additional oven between the units, the partition between the abutting end chambers of adjacent units may similarly be dispensed with. These statements do not appear in the Specification as accepted.
