Brakes, arrangement and disposition of, and braking.-Application of the front wheel brakes of a motor vehicle is prevented unless the rear wheel brakes have been first applied. A sleeve 16, Fig 1, is slidably but non-rotatably mounted upon the fixed shaft 15 upon which turn the foot levers 11, 12 controlling respectively the front and rear wheel brakes. With the lever 12 in the normal position shown, lateral movement of the sleeve 16 is prevented by a projection 20 on the boss of the lever 12 and as a consequence movement of the lever 11 is prevented by engagement of a projection 19 thereon in a recess in the sleeve. When, however, the lever 12 is moved to apply the rear wheel brakes, the projection 20 comes opposite to a recess 18 in the sleeve, which can thus slide laterally to permit movement of the lever 11 to apply the front wheel brakes. In another construction, movement of the lever 12 causes a sleeve to be positively moved laterally so as to displace a projection on the sleeve from engagement with a projection on the boss of the lever 11. According to a further construction, Fig. 3, the lever 12 when moved to apply the rear wheel brakes is arranged to engage a bellcrank lever 26 and thereby to withdraw a bolt 28, which normally prevents movement of the lever 11 of the front wheel brakes.
