Abstract

467,400. Vehicle brakes. PRATT, J. H., MANLEY, G. E., and GIRLING, A. H. G. Oct. 28, 1936, No. 29240. [Class 103 (i)] In an internal shoe brake of the kind in which the shoes are expanded by a wedge 6 moving in a direction at right-angles to the brake back-plate with the interposition of ball or roller bearings 9,12 one face 6c of the wedge is formed parallel to the line of movement of the wedge so that it acts merely as an abutment and has no expanding action. The roller 12 bears on a member 11 which also acts as an abutment from one shoe 10b. The other shoe 10a is operated by surface 6b of the wedge, roller 9 and plunger 7 through an automatic adjusting gear comprising screw and nut 13, 14. The nut 14 is adapted to be turned on excessive wear by a worm driven by ratchet wheel 16 and pawls 17 which are moved by a pin 18 mounted in the plunger 7. The movement of the shoe 10a is transmitted to the shoe 10b by a lever 20 and a thrust member having automatic adjusting means. The lever 20 is of inverted U-shape, carries a roller 20a engaged by the shoe 10a and is fulcrumed in a fixed bracket 21.
